Why do girls still list ‘Lord Of The Rings’ next to things they are interested in? Do they not realise guys haven’t seen that as ‘edgy’ or ‘attractive’ since about 2006?
The fact you enjoy one of the most successful book/films of all time does not make you stand out, alright?
Now, If you’d write how much you love the work of David Gemmell or Brandon Sanderson, then.. yeah, I’d hit it.

And here I was thinking that the list of things I’m interested in was a list of things I’m interested in.

But in all seriousness, a guy who is, in any way, impressed that I like any of the things he does is not someone I want to even associate with.

This was a casual side conversation between Bashir and Sisko about a fellow crew member, completely unrelated to the episode’s plot, and its just so sweet.

It’s nice to know that if you’re a pregnant father-to-be on DS9, your buddies Julian and Miles will build you a hatchling pond, buy you baby clothes, and throw you a shower eagerly attended by the station’s commanding officer (who was practically beaming with joy when he found out that you were expecting).

How wonderful.

If a young man (the same age) hangs up a poster of Hillary Clinton in his room, this is seen as odd (maybe even troubling, is he gay? Oh no!).

Society tells us young men can’t think of women as role models, unless they’re a family member, whereas young women can admire and seek to emulate anyone, regardless of gender.

If you’re a young man, and if you have a poster on your wall with a woman, she had better be half-naked in a bikini, even if the Ronald Reagan or Gen. Patton poster next to it obviously features the man fully-clothed.

Young men are not to taught to think of women as role models. They are taught to think of them as either family members or sexual objects. There is no other category presented.

I’m not PhD material. Not because I’m not smart enough, but because I am simply unwilling to toil away for five years to eventually maybe get a job that I probably won’t enjoy a whole heck of a lot.

One of the most honest descriptions of leaving academia. I loved this paragraph :

”But I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “Oh, you think I’m bad? You should see how my Professor treated me! I’m nice!” as if that excuses any behavioral transgression. It’s a vicious, stupid, self-perpetuating cycle that reduces scientific research to some sort of hazing ritual. And, once your tenured, you can really start being a dick in earnest, because why be nice if there are no repercussions to being mean?”

Let’s bring some humanity back to the sciences.
